Founder of Bloemen Expres de Goede, later Bloemen P. de Goede.
In 1935, at the age of seven, father came to Belgium together with his
parents. They had been bulb-growers in the country around Beverwijk (Netherlands).
The years of crisis in the aftermath of the big crash of 1929 forced them
to try out their luck in Belgium with their best "home-grown"bulbs
in the polders north of Antwerp surrounding the old inn "De blauw
hoef" ("The Blue Farm") at Zandvliet. They settled in Lillo.
They were very successfull at the beginning.
Shortly before World War II the bulb fields surrounding the town of Zandvliet
were a touristic attraction: lots of people travelled by horsetram from
the city of Antwerp to Zandvliet to admire the beauty of the bulb-fields
in spring. The culture of bulbs means a once-only bloom.
Because of the war and the resulting cancellation of export possibilities,
it was decided to switch over to the cultiva-tion of cut flowers from
bulbous plants for the local market. After the Liberation of Belgium,
new varieties were grown and imported into Belgium.
At a very early age already father travelled by tram to deliver flowers
to the Antwerp auction in the Kievitstraat. Important flower shops were
also his customers to whom he delivered any surplus flowers. They got
their orders delivered at their door when the auction was closed. One
of these important customers was Floralia, located at the Mechelsesteenweg.
Jacques De Graaf was a prominent florist before and during World War II.
In fact, all Antwerp florists were prominent, and all were involved in
the foundation of Fleurop Belgium in the nineteen-twenties. Already at
that time they were familiar with the " Flowers-on-Mother's-Day-idea"
on August 15.
No doubt, the older people among us will remember the legendary Antwerp
flower ball which was organised yearly for more than 65 years. After having
delivered his flowers, father remained in the city to work at Floralia
in the afternoon. There he learned the tricks of the floral trade. He
had quickly understood that it was a profitable business for someone willing
to really master the trade.
At home, in the family business, he worked together with three brothers
and two sisters, but the possibilities to go far were rather limited.
Several important customers of Floralia were living in Brasschaat. This
was enough reason for him to start his own flower shop in 1952 in Brasschaat
at the Bredabaan number 284.
