About de Goede Bloemen

The story behind the oldest flower shop in Brasschaat

For 3 generations, de Goede Bloemen has been creating bouquets and floral arrangements full of character. What started as Grandpa Petrus’s sole trader grew into a respected family business, a well-known name, and a team of five floral artists.

de Goede Bloemen,
from father to son

The story of de Goede Bloemen begins with a journey into the previous century.

In the 1930s crisis years, the “de Goede” family left the Netherlands to settle as flower bulb growers in Lillo. During the war, they shifted their focus to cut flowers, which son Petrus delivered by tram in Antwerp. He often stopped at Floralia, one of their most prominent clients, to learn the craftmanship. Because he, as one of six children, had few opportunities to go far in the family business, it was quickly decided: in 1952, Petrus opened the first flower shop in Brasschaat. From his own flower shop on Bredabaan, he could immediately serve many old Floralia customers.

After a career spanning over 30 years, Petrus officially retired in 1989 and entrusted the business to his son Peter – although he continued to play a cheerful role behind the scenes for a long time. Peter was introduced to floristry at an early age, but he didn’t find that enough. So, he chose to follow the masters training at the ‘Florademie,’ where he developed his own specialty. He quickly became known for his contemporary floral work, always with a nod to his classical roots.

He passed this tradition on to his own son, Dirk, and thus the flower shop became part of a three-generation legacy. When he was 14, Dirk already declared he would follow in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, and he immediately tailored his studies to that goal: 4 years of horticulture and 3 years of floral art at PITO were followed by 4 specialization years in floral design and practical experience in leading flower shops. With the title of master floral designer, Dirk was fully ready in 2012 to take over de Goede Bloemen BV.

Today, he still does so with enthusiasm and a love for the craftmanship. This is visible in all his creations, from everyday bouquets to spectacular floral decorations filling entire party venues.

“Flowers are given with a certain emotion. Translating that emotion into floral work in the right way is my favorite challenge. I grew up in the business, but it’s the emotions that blow through it that inspired me to become a florist and to continue the shop in Brasschaat.”
